Electoral Literacy Club (ELC) ELC_REPORT_2022-’23
An Electoral Literacy Club (ELC) is a platform to engage school/college/university students through interesting activities and hands-on experience to sensitise them on their electoral rights and familiarise them with the electoral process of registration and voting. Through ELC, the Election Commission of India, aims at strengthening the culture of electoral participation among young and future voters.
For the first time, Government College, Nedumangad celebrated the National Voters’ Day under the initiative of the Electoral Literacy Club on 25th January, 2019 by enrolling more than 120 students to the Electoral Roll for the General Elections, 2019, though the club was formally inaugurated by the Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Dr. A. Sampath on 18th Feb, 2019.
The club also made efforts to engage its members in various other programmes organised by the state government in the recent past. It was a great achievement for the club that five of its members got the opportunity to participate in the “National Students’ Parliament” organised by the Kerala Legislative Assembly as part of its Diamond Jubilee Celebrations in 2019.
Similarly, in association with the Institute of Parliamentary Affairs (IPA), Government of Kerala, the club organised an One Day Orientation Programme on Model Parliament in our institution in October 2019, though the club could not continue with the programme due to the imposition of country-wide lock down subsequently.
Apart from this, in order to create awareness among the students on their enrolment in the Electoral Rolls, the club made use of online platforms before the Panchayath/Municipality elections held in Kerala in December, 2020 and continues its efforts to enroll the students to the Electoral Roll in the upcoming Kerala Legislative Assembly Elections, 2021.
